Landscape rehabilitation and revegetation of an existing working farm wetland & riparian landscape on the Kapiti Coast in the Lower North Island of New Zealand. Wetland restoration is the manipulation of a former or degraded wetland’s physical, chemical, or biological characteristics to return its natural functions. According to the National Research Council, restoration is the “return of an ecosystem to a close approximation of its condition prior to disturbance”. Restoration practices include re-establishment, which involves rebuilding a former wetland, and rehabilitation, which involves repairing the functions of a degraded wetland. While coastal management aims to protect homes, businesses and the environment from erosion and flooding. Strategies have to take into account are flooding and erosion of the coastline that will have potential social, economic, and environmental impacts.
